I think we're all pleased ... and he is, too. He commanded both sides of the plate and his breaking ball had some depth to it. I think the more he gets into shape, the better he's able to throw the ball down in the zone.John Farrell:
Compared to his Florida starts, he threw the ball down in the zone more consistently, which is what he needs to do. There are indications that he's getting into better shape. He's able to hold his stamina.Colon did not talk to the media after the game. He did not allow a hit for 2.2 innings. He gave up a run when Andre Ethier and Jeff Kent both doubled to start the fourth. His fastball was 89-91 mph, reaching 92 four times. Colon will start for Pawtucket on Thursday and he may join the Red Sox for the April 11-13 Yankees series.
Francona, on Farrell's medical issue:
He had a bone sticking through his mouth. He had surgery on his mouth [Thursday]. He just went about his business and did his job and shouldn't even have been [in Japan]. I don't think he had a solid meal while we were over there. He never said anything, came home [Wednesday], had it operated on, general anesthesia, and he's out here today. That's the life of a coach.The three pitchers vying for the final roster spot — David Aardsma, Javier Lopez and Bryan Corey — are all out of options. Barring a trade, two of them, to get to Pawtucket, will have to be snuck through waivers. ...
